흥미로운 책 하나 소개..

과정사상가로 널리 알려진 데이비드 그리핀이
우리가 아는 9.11 사태에 대한 일반적이고도 통념적인 해석을 깨고
놀랍게도 미국의 부시행정부를 정면으로 공격하여
9.11 사태에 의문을 품으면서 부시행정부의 기만적인 전략이
그 밑바닥에 주도면밀하게 깔려있다고 보고 있는
매우 논쟁적이고도 통렬한 저서입니다..

9.11 사건 이후에 부시 행정부가 어떤 식으로 단박에
세계에서 그 중심과 지도력을 잡게 되고
또한 세계에 대한 무소불위한 전권을 가지게 되는지를
9.11 사태를 배경으로 하여 다각도로 분석하고 있지요..

이 책은 나온 지 한 달 여 된 매우 따끈따끈한 최신 서적인데도
이미 많은 언론과 저널리스트들에게 주목을 받고 있으며
여성신학자로 널리 알려진 로즈마리 류터 역시
매우 중요한 책으로서 꼭 읽어야 한다고 찬탄한 저서이기도 합니다.

저는 진주만 공습이라는 역사적 사건이 실제로 어떠한 배경에
놓여 있는지는 자세히 알아본 바가 없어 잘 모르지만
-혹자는 미당국이 그때 당시 일본의 진주만 공습을 이미 알고 있었는데
세계대전의 본격적 참전을 위해 방치한 것이라는 얘기도 있고 그렇더라구염..
그렇듯이 9/11 사건도 어느 정도는 미부시행정부가 그 조짐을 사전에
이미 알고 있었던 게 아닌가 하고 매우 불온스런 주장을 하고 있지요..

요즘 과정신학파 진영이 예전에 비하면 미제국주의에 대한 공격이
두드러지게 나타나고 있는 분위기가 지배적인데..
이들은 서구의 역사에서 <제국주의>imperialism가 등장할 수 있었던 그 궁극적 맥락에는
하나님에 대한 전능자, 완전자로서의 신(神)개념이 그 밑바닥에 자리하고 있기 때문에
세계 안에 독재로서 군림하게 되고 폭압적 행태로 드러나고 있다고 보고 있습니다..

다시 말해, 근원적으로는 잘못된 형이상학적 관념이 그 밑바닥에 자리함으로서
문명사에 온갖 비극과 만행을 저지르게 된 것이라는 얘깁니다..

이러한 점에 대한 분명한 고찰이 있지 않으면 문명의 충돌은 불가피할 듯 싶습니다..

 

우리는 적어도 기존의 잘못된 교리적 전통들에 대해선 단호하게 혁파해야 할 것입니다..
다시 말해서, 우리가 깊숙이 가지고 있는 뿌리 깊은 관례와 사상들에 대해
분명하고도 지속적으로 저항하지 않으면 안되리라 봅니다..
그렇기에 '신조차도 전능자 완전자로 볼 수 없다'는 인식의 전환도 어쩌면 필요할 것입니다..

 

이번에 데이비드 그리핀은 한국에서 열리는 화이트헤드 국제 행사에 5월 중에 오게 되는데..
이미 이 책에 대한 기자회견이 잡혀있다고 들었습니다..
그래서 조금은 관심을 가지실만한 책이 아닌가 생각이 되서 올려본 것입니다..

David Ray Griffin has been a professor of philosophy of religion and theology at the Claremont School of Theology in California for over 30 years. He is co-director of the Center for Process Studies there and the author or editor of over 20 books.
